Butterflies (Years 1 and 2)

Hello, my name is Mrs Yates and I am the Class Teacher in Butterflies Class. Mrs Wooding, Ms Laws, and Miss Whitehouse are the Teaching Assistants.

We are so excited for the start of the school year and our new class - Butterflies. We will be adding exciting things we have been doing each week to the school’s newsletter.

Over the course of the year, we will be learning about a range of exciting topics from Cornerstones.

Term 1 and 2 will be: How has childhood changed over time?

Term 3 and 4 will be: Why is London our capital city?

Term 5 and 6 will be: What was it like to live in Victorian England?

Reading

For whole class guided reading, we will be focussing on either an extract from Reading Explorers or a topic related text.

Along side this, we will be using Accelerated Reader as our reading tracker in school. At home, we encourage all children to continue to use Go Read to record home reading. We will also record when your child is heard read in school in the same way.

Writing

Within our writing, we will be using Talk For Writing to guide our own learning journey linked with our topic. This style follows immersion, imitation and then innovation. This will be on a two-to-three weekly cycle. Over the course of each term, we will be writing a range of both fiction and non-fiction pieces, for example we are writing our own autobiographies and we will be writing non-chronological reports.

Phonics

We will be teaching phonics and reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. It is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. Based on the original Letters and Sounds, it has been extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme.

When teaching phonics we teach children the pure sounds. For example, instead of saying the letter name like ‘em’ for M or ‘muh’ we teach the sound /m/. This then supports the children when reading as they will be able to correctly sound out the word to blend the sounds together to read the word.

If you would like to hear the pronunciation of each sound in phase 2 and 3 please see the link below:

At the start of this term, we will be running a Phonics Parent's Workshop to introduce you to Little Wandle SSP.

Spellings

In Butterflies Class, we will be using a programme called No Nonsense Spelling. This ensures we offer a comprehensive, yet accessible progression when teaching spellings. We will teach strategies, knowledge and skills pupils need to learn spellings effectively.

Maths

In both Key Stage 1 and 2, we will use White Rose Maths as a foundation to our learning. We will enrich the children’s mathematical knowledge through reasoning, problem solving and investigative activities.

Our Term 1 learning will be focussed on Number and Place Value.

PE

We are lucky enough to still have Mr Booker come into school every Wednesday to deliver PE across the school one day a week. In addition to this, we will also be using Greenacre Sports Partnership. This offers an extensive programme with opportunities for all to participate and compete in school sport and physical activity.

 PSHE/SRE

Across both Key Stage 1 and 2, we will be using a programme called Jigsaw to support the teaching and learning of PSHE and SRE. Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

Homework

In Butterflies Class, we will be setting homework termly in a bingo-sheet style. This will consist of 6 activities linking with the current class topic. Out of these 6, we expect a minimum of 4 pieces completed and handed in over the term. This will be marked at the end of the term, ready to be given back at the start of the next term.
