The Village Academy

The Village Academy is a group of town, city and village schools that have joined together to provide the very best education for the children in our care and where we believe that education is very much a matter of the individual.

Writing, Grammar, Punctuation and Spellings

Writing

Good writing comes from reading and exposure to high quality texts; as this gives vocabulary and voice to characters and settings. Through the Power of Reading we use a range of texts which use settings and characters which are both familiar and unfamiliar to our children. texts are chosen for many reasons and a range of genres are studied throughout the year.

Each unit of writing develops progressively with children developing their speaking and listening skills, vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, organisational skills and sense of audience. Within this, there is an emphasis on drafting, editing and redrafting.  The children use a range of tools to aid this process and to encourage independence in their learning; these tools also ensure that children transfer their English skills to all lessons across the creative curriculum.

In November 2019 we will be revisiting our handwriting policy and sharing this with parents.

Grammar

We have a progression of grammar skills which runs throughout the school. Grammar is generally taught in defined lessons but the expectation is that this is then evident in all writing.

Children from Year 1 to Year 6 learn key grammar and punctuation concepts in the context of writing sentences. Having a firm understanding of these allow children to be confident in building and manipulating interesting and varied sentences. They can then discuss and analyse their own language and grammar choices, as well as those of others, using the appropriate terminology. While this knowledge prepares the children for the end of KS1 and KS2 SATs tests, it also helps them to write with improved accuracy and confidence.

Spellings

Once a child is confident they will start our spelling programme, which is based on no nonsense spelling. This enables children to learn the rules of spellings and practice them in sentences. We have weekly tests and the results are shared with parents.
