Foxes Class (Years 5 and 6)

Foxes Class (Years 5 and 6)

Hello, my name is Mrs Greenwood and I am the Class Teacher in Foxes Class.  Miss Alexander is our Teaching Assistant.

We are so excited for the start of the school year and our new class - Foxes. We will be adding exciting things we have been doing each week to the school’s newsletter.

Over the course of the year, we will be learning about a range of exciting topics.

Term 1: How did ancient Chinese dynasties rule?

Term 2: Can I identify local settlement types from around the world?

Term 3: Who were the Greeks?

Term 4: Were the Tudors terrifying?

Term 5: How does farming effect our daily lives?

Term 6: How do different aspects of physical and human geography effect day-to-day life?

Reading

For whole class guided reading, we will be focusing on a range of reading skills, such as: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising (VIPERS) and then applying these to specific texts.

Along side this, we will be using Accelerated Reader as our reading tracker in school. At home, we encourage all children to continue to use Go Read to record home reading. We will also record when your child is heard read in school in the same way.

Writing

Within our writing, we will be using Talk For Writing to guide our own learning journey linked with our topic. This style follows immersion, imitation and then innovation. This will be on a two-to-three weekly cycle. Over the course of each term, we will be writing a range of both fiction and non-fiction pieces. Some units we will be completing are: A non-chronological report based on why the Shang Dynasty wrote on orcle bones, a newspaper article based on an exciting event from ancient Greece and a narrative about a 'greener' world.

Spellings

In Foxes Class, we will be using a programme called No Nonsense Spelling. This ensures we offer a comprehensive, yet accessible progression when teaching spellings. We will teach strategies, knowledge and skills pupils need to learn spellings effectively.

Maths

In both Key Stage 1 and 2, we use Power Maths and the Mastery Approach as a foundation to our learning. We will enrich the children’s mathematical knowledge through reasoning, problem solving and investigative activities.

Term 1 our learning will be focused on number and place value and the four operations.

Term 2 will focus on measure, shape and statistics and Fractions/Decimals/Percentages.

Term 3 revisiting number and place value, adding and subtracting fractions and angles.

Term 4 looking deeper into multiplication and division, incorporating fractions and decimals, measure including area and volume.

Term 5 revisiting addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Term 6 we will be exploring position, direction and recapping fractions/decimals/percentages.

To support the learning of times tables, we encourage children to use TT Rockstars as a home learning tool. In case your child’s login has been misplaced, we will be sending these home over the coming weeks.

PE

We are lucky enough to still have Mr Booker come into school every Wednesday to deliver PE across the school one day a week. In addition to this, we will also have another PE lesson during the week. We offer an extensive programme with opportunities for all to participate and compete in school sport and physical activity. This term, our second PE day is Fridays.

PSHE/SRE

Across both Key Stage 1 and 2, we will be using a programme called Jigsaw to support the teaching and learning of PSHE and SRE. Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

Homework

In Foxes Class, homework will consist one English activity and one Maths activity each week. Homework will be set every Thursday and is due on the following Wednesday.
