PSHE

Vision

Our HeartSmart vision is to deliver the PSHE curriculum in a creative way to build character, emotional health and resilience. We aim to equip children with principles, skills, habits and a mind-set that will improve their mental health, relationships and achievements.

Intent

At Lynsted, we deliver high quality PSHE teaching to enable all children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Children will be equipped with the knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, appreciating what it is to be part of a diverse society. They will also be prepared for tackling moral, social and cultural issues that are part of life’s journey.

 

Through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, children will develop their sense of self-worth and confidence, building their resilience while learning the importance of nurturing mental as well as physical health. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our vision and values.

Implementation

At Lynsted, we use a scheme called ‘HeartSmart’ to deliver our lessons. Its aim is to build character, emotional heath and resilience in children, and its core principle is the importance of loving and accepting ourselves as well as loving and responding well to others. Each term has a different focus which is progressive across the Key Stage.

 

• Term 1 - Get HeartSmart: Learn what it is to be HeartSmart and how we can Power On to love ourselves and others well.

• Term 2 - Don’t Forget to Let Love In: Learning how important, valued and loved we are.

• Term 3 - Too much Selfie Isn’t Healthy: Exploring the importance of others and how to love them well.

• Term 4 - Don’t Rub It In, Rub It Out: Understanding how to process negative emotion and choose forgiveness to restore relationships.

• Term 5 - Fake Is A Mistake: Unpacking how to bravely communicate truth and be proud of who we are.

• Term 6 - ‘No Way Through,’ Isn’t True!: Knowing there is a way through every situation, no matter how impossible it may seem.

 

PSHE lessons are scaffolded to enable all children to access the learning. Challenges are set for children to make connections to previous learning and explain subject specific vocabulary.

Impact

At Lynsted, our children are provided with the tools and knowledge required to build healthy relationships and have a strong understanding of the importance of physical and mental wellbeing. The impact of this is our children know how to be safe and can manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way ready for the next stage in their learning journey.

Scheme

HeartSmart supports teachers with their planning of PSHE ensuring the National Curriculum objectives are met.

Assessment

PSHE is assessed termly. At the end of every HeartSmart unit, the children complete a wellbeing check-in/assessment. This is to indicate their emotional understanding of the unit taught. This data is recorded but NOT used to assess a child academically in PSHE, but used to support the wellbeing of pupils.

 

The assessment will flag up and children who have struggled with the emotional concept of the unit and may need further wellbeing support. There are three stages: TA check-in, teacher check-in and support and finally Wellbeing Team support (FLO & SENDCo). The check-ins can support early wellbeing interventions

Inclusion

PSHE is an inclusive subject. By its very nature, we consider all. We believe that all our children can make progress and be successful in PSHE; we have high expectations for all. It is a subject that ensures all are included through its creative ways of expression including drama, drawing and oral communication and recording.

 

Our emphasis is on vocabulary, to develop the children’s understanding of SEMH and the world around them. Skills are taught in small steps to ensure that children master each part before moving on. Visual aids, word banks, working walls and knowledge organisers are used to further support children. Adults adapt learning to ensure it is accessible to all children. In-class small focus groups also support all children to be included and successful.

SMSC and Cultural Capital

At Lynsted, the children’s opportunities to experience spirituality is paramount. We believe that spirituality is all around us and can be experienced in the smallest of things like a cloud formation. PSHE gives the children the opportunity to explore their feelings and emotions and those of others.

 

We give children the opportunity to have a healthy body and mind but providing them with healthy snacks, fresh air through outdoor learning, exercise through a healthy body, mind, and mindfulness. PSHE allows the children to know and experience what a healthy lifestyle is.

Progression of Skills & Knowledge

Relationships & Sex Education

An important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term. 

 

There are four main aims of teaching RSE:

 

• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
• To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
• To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
• To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.

 

Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage. At no point will a child be taught something that is inappropriate; and if a question from a child arises and the teacher feels it would be inappropriate to answer, (for example, because of its mature or explicit nature), this information with be shared with you by your child’s class teacher. The question will not be answered to the child or class if it is outside the remit of that year group’s programme.

 

Below is a summary of RSE coverage within the Jigsaw scheme for each year group:


• Foundation Stage - Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies
• Year 1 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts
• Year 2 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which parts of the body are private and why this is)
• Year 3 - How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they grow older
• Year 4 - Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation
• Year 5 - Puberty for boys and girls, and conception
• Year 6 - Puberty for boys and girls and understanding conception to birth of a baby
